By now you know that adjectives can be masculine and feminine.

He is great!
Elle est géniale !
She is great!
The adjective has an –e at the end, because you are referring to a girl/woman. So it’s feminine.
Now you might think that anytime you are referring to something feminine, you’d have to use the feminine adjective.
Well, you’d almost always be right.
However, there is one particular case where this is not true:
Isolated adjectives after c’est are masculine.
You will now see two examples with la maison (the house), to show you how isolated adjectives after c’est are masculine.
La maison fait 100 mètres de large. – La maison est grande.
The house is 100 meters wide. – The house is big.
La maison fait 100 mètres de large. – C’est grand.
The house is 100 meters wide. – It’s big.
In this first example, grande is feminine, as it refers back to la maison which is feminine.
In this second example, grand is masculine because it is after c’est. In this case the grand is more a general comment about the size.
You will now also see two examples with la montre (the watch), to show you how isolated adjectives after c’est are masculine.
Aujourd’hui, la montre coûte 0€. – Cette montre est gratuite.
Today the watch costs 0€. – This watch is free.
Aujourd’hui, la montre coûte 0€. – C’est gratuit !

In this first example, gratuite is feminine, as it refers back to la montre which is feminine.
In this second example, gratuit is masculine because it is after c’est. In this case the gratuit is more a general comment about the price.
