Croire means “to believe” and is an irregular verb

There are 3 general ways in which you can use croire.

1. The most simple way to use croire is as “to believe“. After the word croire the French put the word que which means “that”.

Je crois que la Constitution doit être respectée.

I believe that the Constitution must be respected.

2. When one believes in someone or God then “croire en” is used.

Je crois en Dieu.

I believe in God.

Je crois en vous.

I believe in you.

3. When one believes in something such as an idea or a thought then “croire à” is used.

Parfois, nous croyons à nos propres mensonges.

Sometimes, we believe in our own lies.

Je crois aux démocraties et à leur capacité à faire le bien.

I believe in democracies and in their ability to do good.

Pronunciation of Croire Conjugations

In this section on croire conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.

There is 1 important rule to take into account when you want to pronounce a croire conjugation in the present tense.

1. The je, tu, il/elle/on, and ils/elles verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -s, –t, and -ent endings are not pronounced. It is just the “croi” part that gets pronounced.

Je crois

Tu crois

Il croit

Ils croient

These verbs are pronounced in the same exact way.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
