No pudimos ir a surfear debido al mal tiempo.
We couldn’t go surfing due to bad weather.
Debido a su fortaleza, Elena ha conseguido superar el cáncer.
Because of her strength, Elena has managed to overcome cancer.
You can use por instead of debido a and the sentence would be correct and have the same meaning.
Using debido a makes a sentence more formal than when you use por.
Due To/Because of in Spanish = Debido A Que + Phrase
Another way to say “due to/because of” in Spanish is like this:
- debido a que + phrase
With this construction, you cannot just follow debido a que with a noun. There needs to be an entire phrase.

Bea consiguió el trabajo debido a que su tío es el dueño de la empresa.
Bea got the job because her uncle owns the company.
Los niños no tendrán colegio la próxima semana debido a que muchos de ellos han cogido la varicela.
The children will be out of school next week because many of them have caught chicken pox.
You can use porque instead of debido a que and the sentence would be correct and have the same meaning.
Using debido a que makes a sentence more formal than when you use porque.
