Using Reflexive Pronouns to say Each Other in French
You will use reflexive pronouns (nous/vous/se/s’) to say “each other” in French.
Elle et moi, on se comprend.
She and I understand each other.
Nous nous sommes regardés.
We looked at each other.
Ils se sont souri toute la journée.
They smiled at each other the entire day.
Ils se comprennent parfaitement.
They understand each other perfectly.
Mes parents s’aiment beaucoup !
My parents love each other a lot!
However, this may be confusing as times.
How do you know that it is not just a “normal” use of reflexive pronouns rather than to say “each other”?
For example, this French sentence can mean two things depending on the context.
Les soldats se sont battus.
The soldiers fought each other.
Les soldats se sont battus.
The soldiers fought themselves.
You will know which meaning is intented by looking at the context.
Only by looking at the context will you know what the speaker of the sentence meant.
