Using El Que/La Que/Los Que/Las Que With Prepositions Except A And De = For/With/On/In/From/Which
El que and its variations can refer to people and things.
El coche con el que tuvo el accidente quedó destrozado.
The car with which he had the accident was wrecked.
La empresa para la que trabajaba quebró hace un año.
The company he worked for went bankrupt a year ago.
Todos los restaurantes en los que comimos en Roma eran muy buenos.
All the restaurants we ate at in Rome were very good.
Esas son las chicas con las que hablé durante la fiesta.
These are the girls I talked to during the party.
If you only refer to people, then you can also use quien/quienes.
Ese es el chico con el que bailé toda la noche.
That’s the guy I danced with all night.
Ese es el chico con quien bailé toda la noche.
That’s the guy I danced with all night.
Mis amigas con las que hablabas, son muy amables.
My friends you were talking to, they are very nice.
Mis amigas con quienes hablabas, son muy amables.

Using El Que/La Que/Los Que/Las Que With Preposition A = To Which/To Whom/That
Below you can see some examples with el que/la que/los que/las + a.
Don’t forget about contractions:
- a + el que = al que
Este es el colegio al que venía de pequeña.
This is the school I went to when I was little. [literal: to which I went]
La barbacoa a la que fuimos el sábado pasado fue realmente divertida.
The barbecue we went to last Saturday was really fun. [literal: to which we went]
Éstos son los amigos a los que siempre escribo.
These are the friends I always write to. [literal: to whom always I write]
Las conferencias a las que acudimos el año pasado fueron mucho más multitudinarias que las de este año.
The conferences we attended last year were much larger in number than this year. [literal: to which we attended]
Using El Que/La Que/Los Que/Las Que With Preposition De = Of/From/About which//About whom/Who
Below you can see some examples with el que/la que/los que/las + de.
Don’t forget about contractions:
- de + el que = del que
Ése es el colega del que te hablé.
That’s the colleague I told you about. [literal: about which]
La fiesta de la que te hablé fue en casa de Tomás.
The party I told you about was at Tomás’ house. [literal: about which]
Los grupos de música de los que te hablé tocarán este año en el festival de Benicassim.
The bands I told you about will be playing at this year’s Benicassim festival. [literal: about which]
Éstas son manzanas de las que nos regaló Manuel.
These are the apples that Manuel gave us.
As you know, you can use quien/quienes as a substitute, but only when you refer to people.
Los compañeros de quienes te hablé han sido despedidos.
The colleagues I told you about have been dismissed.
Marcos es un joven futbolista de quien el mundo conocerá más en pocos años.
Marcos is a young footballer about whom the world will know more in a few years.
However, you can also use el cual/la cual/los cuales/las cuales as a substitute for el que/la que/los que/las que and the meaning will remain the same.
You can refer to people and things with cual.
Ése es el colega del cual te hablé.
That’s the colleague I told you about.
La novia de Pablo, a la cual no conoces, habla alemán.
Pablo’s girlfriend, whom you don’t know, speaks German.
Los cojines de los cuales compramos en Ikea se han desteñido.
The cushions which we bought from Ikea have discoloured.
La gente está haciendo preguntas a las cuales debo contestar.
People are asking questions to which I have to answer.
