Express A Consequence in Spanish with Así Que/Por Lo Tanto
To express the result/consequence of something you can use:
- asi que (so)
- por lo tanto (therefore)
Have a look at some examples:
Mi novio se ha ido de vacaciones con sus amigos, así que me quedaré sola todo el fin de semana.
My boyfriend has gone on holiday with his friends, so I will be alone for the whole weekend.
El alumno no ha entregado el trabajo a tiempo, por lo tanto tendrá que repetirlo en el segundo trimestre.
The student has not handed in the work on time, therefore he will have to repeat it in the second term.
You can see in the first part of the sentence an action/event was mentioned, and then así que/por lo tanto was used to describe the result of that action/event.
Please also note that all the examples were in the indicative mood and not in the subjunctive mood.
Using The Subjunctive
You can also use the subjunctive if you want to convey a level of uncertainty or doubt.
Las patatas todavía no están cocinadas, así que probablemente no comamos hasta las tres de la tarde.
The potatoes are not cooked yet, so we probably won’t eat until three in the afternoon.
El avión acaba de despegar, por lo tanto puede que Juan no llegue a tiempo para la cena.
The plane has just taken off, so Juan may not make it in time for dinner.
After adding certain trigger words for doubt (probablemente/puede que) you use the subjunctive (comamos/llegue).
Should there be no indication of uncertainty or doubt then naturally you will use the indicative mood.
indicative
Creo que he comido algo en mal estado, así que voy a quedarme hoy en casa.
I think I’ve eaten something bad, so I’m going to stay home today.
subjunctive
Creo que he comido algo en mal estado, así que lo más seguro es que me quede hoy en casa.
I think I’ve eaten something bad, so I’ll probably stay home today.
