You can use como to express cause in Spanish.
The order is as such:
- Cause: “Como no tenemos dinero”
- Effect: “este año no vamos de vacaciones.”
Please have a look at the following examples:
Como no tenemos dinero, este año no vamos de vacaciones.
As we have no money, we are not going on holiday this year.
Como el aforo estaba completo, no pudieron entrar en la fiesta.
As the capacity was full, they could not enter the party.
Express Cause in Spanish with Porque
You can use porque to express cause in Spanish.
The order is as such:
- Effect: “Este año no iremos de vacaciones”
- Cause: “porque no tenemos dinero.”
Please have a look at the following examples:
Este año no iremos de vacaciones porque no tenemos dinero.
This year we won’t go on holiday because we don’t have any money.
No han podido entrar en la fiesta porque el aforo estaba completo.
They were unable to enter the party because the capacity was full.
Ana se ha cortado el pelo porque necesitaba un cambio de look.
Ana has cut her hair because she needed a new look.
Express Cause in Spanish with Es Que
You can use es que to express cause in Spanish.
Es que tends to be used to justify an action that has been taken, or to simply make an excuse for something that has been done.
The order is as such:
- Effect: “¿Este año no vais de vacaciones?”
- Cause: “Es que no tenemos dinero”
In this case, the cause and effect are in two different sentences.
Please have a look at the following examples:
¿Este año no vais de vacaciones? – Es que no tenemos dinero.
Are you not going on holiday this year? – We just don’t have the money.
¿Por qué no vinisteis a la fiesta? – Es que el aforo estaba completo.
Why didn’t you come to the party? – It’s because the party was full.
Ana, estás muy guapa. ¿Te has cortado el pelo? – Sí, es que necesitaba un cambio de look.
Ana, you look beautiful, did you cut your hair? – Yes, I needed a new look.
