There are two ways to say “it is good” and “it is bad” in Spanish.

Essentially, there’s a set combination to say ‘it is good” and “it is bad” in Spanish.

These set combinations are “es bueno/malo” and “está bien/mal“.

This lesson will teach you what they mean and how to use them.

Es Bueno & Malo = It is Good & It is Bad

  • es + bueno [adjective] = it is good

Es bueno que hagas ejercicio cada día.

It is good that you exercise every day.

Fumas mucho y eso no es bueno.

You smoke a lot and that’s not good.

  • es + mal [adjective] = it is wrong

Es malo conducir si se ha bebido.

It is bad to drive if you have been drinking.

Beber tanta cola es malo.

Drinking so much cola is bad.

Está Bien & Está Mal = It Is Good & It Is Bad/Wrong

  • está + bien [adverb] = it is good

Está bien que hagas ejercicio cada día.

It’s good that you exercise every day.

Fumas mucho y eso no está bien.

You smoke a lot and that’s not good.

When you use ésta bien with a work of art (series, films, book etc) you are also saying that it is interesting/fun/entertaining:

Hemos visto una serie sobre el espacio que está muy bien, te la recomiendo.

We have seen a series on space that is very good, I recommend it.

  • está malo [adverb] = it is bad/wrong

Está mal conducir si se ha bebido.

It is bad/wrong to drive if you have been drinking.

Beber tanta cola está mal.

Drinking so much cola is bad.

When you use ésta mal you are also talking about the morality of an action:

Está mal no dar las gracias.

It is (morally) wrong not to say thank you.
