He and She in Spanish = Él/Ella
In order to say “he” and “she” in Spanish you will say:
- He = Él
- She= Ella
Take a look at the following examples:
Él tiene una guitarra.
He has a guitar.
Él tiene un hijo.
He has a son.
Ella tiene un piano.
She has a piano.
Ella tiene una hija.
She has a daughter.
Now it may seem pretty simple, but there’s one thing that you should be aware of.
In Spanish you can omit the subject pronouns and use the verb on its own.
Because the verb is already conjugated in the he and she form, people know that you are talking in the he or she form.
But what happens if you don’t use subject pronouns?
Tiene un monopatín.
He/She has a skateboard.
Tiene una mochila.
He/She has a backpack.
Do you know if you are referring to a man or a woman in these sentences?
Not really.
Because you not using the subject pronouns, the gender of the people in those sentences is unclear.
If you want to draw attention to the gender, you can use él or ella.
If you don’t want to, then you can form sentences without ello or ella.
In Spanish, the subject pronouns tend to be omitted.
