Here = Aquí
When you want to say “here” in Spanish, you will say:
- here = aquí
You will say this when something is near to you.
Here are some examples:
Las llaves están aquí. No te olvides de cogerlas.
The keys are here. Don’t forget to take them.
Aquí tienes tus gafas. No vuelvas a perderlas.
Here are your glasses. Don’t lose them again. (you=tú)
There = Ahí and Allí
There are two ways to say “there” in Spanish:
- there = ahí (a bit far)
- there = allí (far)
Ahí is something that we don’t have in English.
It is a distance between here and there.
It represents something that is just a bit far.
Here are some examples:
Quedamos ahí, junto a la fuente a las 8.
Let’s meet there, next to the fountain at 8 o’clock.
Ahí está tu abuela. Ve a darle un beso.
There’s your grandmother. Go give her a kiss.(you=tú)
Allí will be used to refer to something that is far to you.
Here are some examples:
La novia de Manuel vive allí, al lado del hospital.
Manuel’s girlfriend lives there, next to the hospital.
Siempre le ha gustado Londres. Vivió allí durante un tiempo.
He has always liked London. He lived there for a while.
