How to Form Adverbs in French
To form regular adverbs in French, take the feminine form of an adjective, and add -ment to the end.
It’s very easy, and in time you will be able to do it intuitively.
- Take the feminine form
- rapid -> rapide
- parfait -> parfaite
- heureux -> heureuse
- Add -ment
- rapide -> rapidement
- parfaite -> parfaitement
- heureuse -> heureusement
Paul parle rapidement.
Paul speaks quickly.
Ils fonctionnent parfaitement ensemble.

Forming Adverbs from adjectives that end in -ant and -ent
Adjectives that end in -ant and -ent become adverbs in the following way:
- ant becomes -amment
- ent becomes -emment
L’homme bruyant ronfle bruyamment.
The loud man snores loudly.
Il parle allemand couramment.
He speaks German fluently.
L’homme prudent exhorte Paul à conduire prudemment.
The careful man urged Paul to drive carefully.
Thomas est un professeur patient. Il écoute patiemment tous ses élèves.
