How to make Comparisons with Adjectives in French

If you want to express that one thing is more than the other, then you will use the following construction:

  • plus [adjectif] que = more [adjective] than / [adjective]-er than

Tokyo est plus grand que Toulouse.

Tokyo is bigger than Toulouse.

Elle est plus grande que lui.

She is bigger than him.

If you want to express that one thing is on the same level as something else, then you will use the following construction:

  • aussi [adjectif] que = as [adjectif] as

Ma mère est aussi intelligente que mon père.

My mom is as smart as my father.

Mes amis sont aussi courageux qu’eux.

My friends are as courageous as them.

If you want to express that one thing is less than something else, then you will use the following construction:

  • moins [adjectif] que = less [adjectif] than         

Elle est moins grande que moi.

She is less tall than me.

Paul est moins gentil que moi.

Paul is less kind than me.

Please note that you always have to agree in gender when you compare with adjectives.

Please also note that you have to use stress pronouns (que moi, toi, lui/elle, nous, vous, eux/elles) when you compare with adjectives.
