How to Form Inverted Questions with Nouns
In the previous lesson you learnt how to form inverted questions in French.
In that lesson, the main focus area was subject pronouns (je, tu, il, elle, nous, vous, ils, elles).
In this lesson you will learn how to form inverted questions with nouns (humans, plants, animals, and things).
To invert questions with nouns, you will need to add an additional subject pronoun to repeat the subject noun.
- (question word) + subject noun + verb + je/tu/il/elle/on/nous/vous/ils/elles
La bibliothèque est–elle ouverte aujourd’hui ?
Is the library open today?
Les lions mangent–ils des légumes ?
Do lions eat vegetables?
Les plantes ont–elles besoin d’eau ?
Do plants need water?
When a verb ends with a vowel, then a t must be inserted in-between the verb and the il/elle/on, with hypens on either side.
- (question word) + subject noun + verb + -t- + il/elle/on
Quand Jean va-t-il partir ?
When is Jean going to leave?
Stella aime-t-elle les voitures ?
Does Stella like cars?
Votre père porte-t-il des lunettes ?
Does your father wear glasses?
The subject pronoun always needs to agree in gender and number.
