Use Que in Spanish to Refer to a Noun

When you refer to a noun you will use que in Spanish.

Please have a look at the following examples:

El pastel que nos comimos lo hizo tu madre.

The cake that we ate was made by your mother. (you=tú)

El camarero que nos atendió es también de Sevilla.

The waiter who served us was also from Seville.

La señora que vive arriba tiene tres perros.

The lady who lives upstairs has three dogs.

In these situations “que” tends to mean:

  • that
  • which
  • who

Use Que in Spanish in Indirect Speech

When you use indirect speech, meaning that you mention what someone else has said, you will use que in Spanish.

Please have a look at the following examples:

Marcos me contó que su hermana Isabel va a tener un hijo.

Marcos told me (that) his sister Isabel is going to have a baby.

El médico me ha dicho que debo beber mucha agua y descansar.

The doctor told me (that) I should drink a lot of water and rest.

Su marido le ha dicho que quiere el divorcio.

Her husband has told her (that) he wants a divorce.

When you use “que like this it means “that”.

In English you don’t have to use “that”, but in Spanish you do have to use “que“.
