How to Use Reciprocal Verbs in Spanish
Before we get to how to use reciprocal verbs in Spanish, you may wonder what reciprocal verbs are in the first place.
Reciprocal verbs are verbs that express an action that two or more than two people do to each other.
Naturally only the plural reflexive pronouns (nos, os, se) can be used as this only applies to multiple people.
Here are some examples:
Mi hermana y yo nos queremos mucho, aunque siempre nos peleamos.
My sister and I love each other very much, although we always fight.
¿Vosotros os habéis visto antes?
Have you seen each other before?
Recuerdo que mis abuelos nunca se besaban en público.
I remember my grandparents never kissed in public.
Ustedes se conocieron en Praga, ¿verdad?
You met in Prague, didn’t you?
Normally you place the pronoun (nos, os, se) before the verb.
However, with an infinitive or gerund you can also place the pronoun (nos, os, se) after and attached to the verb.
Vamos a callarnos de una vez para poder escuchar al presentador.
Let’s shut up for once so we can listen to the presenter.
¿Van ustedes a escucharse?
Will you listen to each other?
Sometimes, you may use “mutuamente” or “el/la uno al otro” at the end of a sentence to emphasize the reciprocity.
Ana y Olivia se adoran mutuamente.
Ana and Olivia adore each other.
Ana y Olivia se adoran la una a la otra.
Ana and Olivia adore each other.
