Regular -ir Verbs Conjugation Method

This section will show you how regular -ir verbs are conjugated in the passé simple.

There is a two step method that will make everything very easy for you.

In order to conjugate regular verbs that end with -ir in the passé simple one must:

1. Find the stem of the verb (verb minus the -ir ending)
2. Add the new ending (is, is, it, îmes, îtes, irent)

The verb choisir means “to choose” in English.

We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “je” form using the two step method.

1. chois

The stem of choisir is chois.

2. choisis

When you add the is ending you get choisis.

So, the je form of choisir in the passé simple is:

je choisis

• regular -er verbs
• regular -ir verbs
• regular -re verbs

The regular -ir verbs group is the second biggest group. Many French verbs fall in this group.
