There are two ways to express “to feel” in Spanish:

  • sentir
  • sentirse

In this lesson you will learn when to use which one!

Sentir => To Feel Something

You use sentir to express that you “feel something”.

After the verb sentir, you will say what you feel.

Siento mucho orgullo cuando veo a mi madre trabajando en el hospital.

I feel a lot of pride when I see my mother working in the hospital.

Siento la necesidad de llamarle, aunque no creo que me conteste.

I feel the need to call him, although I don’t think he will answer me.

You can also follow sentir with que.

Sentimos que tenemos que separarnos durante una temporada.

We feel we have to separate for a while.

Sentirse -> How You Feel

You use sentirse to express how you feel.

As you can see by the “-se” ending, sentirse is a reflexive verb.

This means that you have to use the reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os, se).

After the verb sentirse you can use an adjective.

¡Me siento más viva que nunca!

I feel more alive than ever!

Bea se siente mal. Voy a llevarla al médico.

Bea is feeling bad. I’m going to take her to the doctor.

You can also use an adverb after sentirse.

Ayer mis padres estaban enfermos. Ahora, mis padres se sienten bien.

Yesterday my parents were sick. Now, my parents feel well.

Sometimes you will see “como” (like) after sentirse.

Me siento como un extraño.

I feel like an outsider.
