What are Direct Object Pronouns?
You may read “direct object pronouns” and feel a sense of dread as you have no idea what it means.
However, it is actually something really simple.
Have a look at the two sentences:
Have you seen the film? Yes, I really like the film
Have you seen the film? Yes, I really like it.
Rather than repeat “the film” again, you use “it” to refer to “the film”.
This means that you don’t have to repeat the noun (the film) again.
You use a direct object (it) to refer to “the film”.
When you don’t want to repeat the noun, you will use a direct object pronoun.
How to use Spanish Direct Object Pronouns
Masculine | Feminine | |
Singular | lo (him/it) | la (her/it) |
Plural | los (them) | las (them) |
The direct object pronouns are used to replace people and things.
In this lesson we are only going to focus on the four most important ones.
You can see those four in the table above, as well as in the bigger table at the beginning of the lesson.
¿Quieres probar el vino? – Gracias, pero ya lo he probado.
Do you want to taste the wine? – Thank you, but I’ve already tasted it.
¿Has limpiado la cocina? – Sí, la he limpiado esta mañana.
Have you cleaned the kitchen? – Yes, I cleaned it this morning.
¿Has preparado los bocadillos para el viaje? – Sí, los he preparado.
Have you prepared the sandwiches for the trip? – Yes, I have prepared them.
¿Habéis entendido bien las preguntas del examen? – Sí, las hemos entendido.
Did you understand the questions in the exam? – Yes, we understood them.
In every sentence the noun has been highlighted.
This noun is then replaced by the direct object pronoun in the following sentence.
This direct object pronoun has also been highlighted.
So, if you don’t want to repeat the noun, you will use a direct object pronoun.
