Introduction
In the previous lesson you had a brief introduction to Spanish nouns.
In this lesson you will have a more complete overview of Spanish nouns.
The things that you learnt in the previous lesson will also return here, but you will also learn new things.
Feminine Spanish Nouns
- The majority of Spanish nouns with different forms end in an -o for masculine nouns, and end with an -a for feminine nouns.
El dormitorio es grande.
The bedroom is big.
La piscina es pequeña.
The pool is small.
- Masculine nouns that end in an -a or an -e stay the same, there’s no difference between the masculine form and feminine form.
Él es un idiota y ella es una idiota.
He is an idiot and she is an idiot.
John es estadounidense y Mary es estadounidense.
John is an American and Mary is an American.
- Masculine nouns that end with a consonant will add an –a in the feminine form:
Mi padre es traductor y mi madre es traductora.
My father is a translator and my mother is a translator.
Él es tailandés y ella es tailandesa.
He is a Thai and she is a Thai.
Please note that the accent disappears in the feminine form.
Also, you don’t use articles before a profession, nationality, or religion in Spanish.
Plural Spanish Nouns
- If the noun ends with a vowel, then you will add an -s at the end.
Los dormitorios son grandes.
The bedrooms are big.
Las piscinas son pequeñas.
The pools are small.
Yo tengo un coche rojo, pero mi hermano tiene dos coches azules.
I have a red car, but my brother has two blue cars.
Solo tengo una llave aquí, pero dos llaves en casa.
I have only one key here, but two keys at home.
El ingrediente barato sabe mal, pero los ingredientes caros saben bien.
The cheap ingredient tastes bad, but the expensive ingredients taste well.
- If the noun end with a consonant that is NOT a -z, then you will add an -es at the end.
El director generoso está aquí, y los directores codiciosos están allí.
The generous director is here, and the greedy directors are there.
La mujer amable está aquí, y las mujeres malas están allí.
The kind woman is here, and the mean women are there.
- If then noun ends with a -z, then you will change that -z to a -c and add an -es to the end.
La actriz baja está aquí, y las actrices altas están allí.
The short actress is here, and the tall actresses are there.
Esta emperatriz es amable, pero esas emperatrices son malas.
This empress is kind, but those empresses are mean.
Mi voz es baja, pero sus voces son altas.
My voice is low, but their voices are high.
Mi lápiz es barato, pero sus lápices son caros.
My pencil is cheap, but their pencils are expensive.
