When talking about the weather in French, you will need to know two idioms:
- il fait [adjective]
- il y a [noun]
You have to use the right idiom depending on what you want to say.

Weather in French: Il fait [adjective]
If you want to talk about the weather in French, then you can use the following idiom:
- il fait + [adjective]
You are literally saying “it does + adjective”.

Il fait froid.
It is cold.
Il fait beau.
The weather is nice.
Il fait mauvais.
The weather is bad.
Il fait trop chaud.
It is too hot.
Il fait bon.

You may wonder, what the difference is between il fait beau and il fait bon.
Il fait beau is about the appearance of the weather (e.g. blue sky). If everything looks good, then you’d use this.

If you want to talk about the weather in French, then you have to use the following idiom:

You are literally saying “there is” + noun.
Il y a du vent.
It is windy.
[lit: There is some wind]
Il y a de l’orage.
It is stormy.

As you can see, you are always using the word some.
This means that you have to use the correct word for some in French.
So, the following possibilites arise:
