Le futur proche is used to describe an action that will happen in the near future.

You may be wondering what exactly counts as the near future.

Generally it is anything from the present moment until the next day.

Je vais aller au cinéma.

I am going to the cinema.

This example shows that an action is going to happen very quickly.

The example does not indicate a time-frame, but it’s safe to assume that this is going to happen soon.

Je vais aller chez le dentiste demain.

I am going to the dentist tomorrow.

In this case it’s clear that someone is going to the dentist tomorrow.

Both examples show that something is going to happen in the near future.

Forming the le futur proche is very easy:

  • aller + infinitif

You need to conjugate aller and add the infinitive (full verb) of the verb that you want to use after it.

Elle va lire un livre.
