When To Use The Spanish Conditional Tense: Hypothetical Actions
You will use the Spanish conditional tense to express hypothetical actions that might or would happen in the past and in the future.
In English, you would use “would + verb” to express the conditional tense.
Here are some examples:
gustar
¿Qué les gustaría beber?
What would they like to drink?
bailar
No bailarían esta canción.
They wouldn’t dance to this song.
When To Use The Spanish Conditional Tense: Advice/Suggestions, Express Wishes, and Make Polite Requests
You will use the Spanish conditional tense to give advice/suggestions, express wishes, and make polite requests.
To give advice/suggestions and to express wishes you will use deber or tener que in the conditional tense.
This would mean that this would be the structure:
- [si + present tense] + deber/tener que in the conditional tense
Si te gustan esos zapatos deberías comprarlos.
If you like those shoes you should buy them.
Si te gustan esos zapatos tendrías que comprarlos.
If you like those shoes you should buy them.
