When To Use The Spanish Future Tense: Express the Probability of Something Occurring at the Time of Speaking.
You will use the Spanish future tense to express the probability of something occurring at the time of speaking.
When you use the Spanish future tense in this way, you don’t express what is going to happen, or what is happening for sure, but rather:
- predict what might happen
- speculate what might happen
- express what is most likely happening
Here are some examples that show the probability of something happening at the time of speaking:
estar
¿Crees que los niños estarán bien solos en casa?
Do you think the children will be OK on their own at home?
haber
Es raro que Jorge llegue tarde. Se habrá quedado dormido.
It is rare for Jorge to be late. He must have overslept.
quedar
Calculo que quedarán unas dos o tres horas para que lleguemos.
I estimate that it will be about two or three hours before we arrive.
estar
El paquete llegaba a las diez. ¿Dónde estará?
The package was due to arrive at ten o’clock. Where will it be?
You see this way being used a lot less than the first one.
Should the expression of probability be about the past, then you would use the conditional tense.
