Who/That/Which in Spanish = Que

To say “who” or “that/which” in Spanish, you will say:

  • who/that/which = que

You can use que to refer to people and things.

Que doesn’t have to agree in gender or number to what it is referring to.

Have a look at some examples:

Mi empresa, que se dedica a exportar vino, va a trasladar su sede a California.

My company, which exports wine, is moving its headquarters to California.

Mi vecina, que vive en el tercero, es también inglesa.

My neighbour, who lives on the third floor, is also English.

He leído ese libro, que es muy bueno, por cierto.

I have read that book, which is very good, by the way.

Who/That/Which in Spanish = El Cual/La Cual/Los Cuales/Las Cuales

To say “who” or “that/which” in Spanish, you will say:

  • who/that/which = el cual/la cual/los cuales/las cuales

You can use cual and its variations to refer to people and things.

As you can see cual has to agree in gender and number to what it is referring to.

Mi primo Juan, el cual trabaja como fontanero, va a casarse el mes que viene.

My cousin Juan, who works as a plumber, is getting married next month.

Mi casa, la cual hace ya 50 años que se construyó, todavía parece como nueva.

My house, which was built 50 years ago, still looks like new.

Estas pizzas, las cuales ha hecho mi madre, son las mejores que he probado nunca.

These pizzas, which my mother made, are the best I have ever tasted.

Sus perros, los cuales habían adoptado cuando eran cachorros, murieron el año pasado.

Their dogs, which they had adopted as puppies, died last year.

Cual is more formal than que.

Who/That/Which in Spanish = Quien/Quienes

To say “who” in Spanish, you will say:

  • who = quien/quines

You can only use quien/quienes to refer to people.

It only has to agree in number to what it is referring to.

Mi tío, quien es empresario, nos ha conseguido entradas para el concierto.

My uncle, who is a businessman, got us tickets for the concert.

Mis amigas, quienes son muy extrovertidas, invitaron a aquellos chicos a la fiesta.

My friends, who are very outgoing, invited those boys to the party.

Quien/quienes is more formal than que.
