Plural Definite Articles in Spanish: los & las = the

You can say “the + [plural noun]” in the following ways in Spanish:

  • los + [masculine plural noun]
  • las + [feminine singular noun]

There are two options, because Spanish is a gendered language.

Every noun is either masculine or feminine.

Los” is used for masculine plural nouns.

Las” is used for feminine plural nouns.

In practice it looks like this:

Los chicos son de Portugal.

The boys are from Portugal.

Los aviones no funcionan.

The planes are not working.

Los atletas corren.

The athletes are running.

Las llaves son viejas.

The keys are old.

Las puertas están abiertas.

The doors are open.

Las chicas son de Argentina.

The girls are from Argentina.
