European Spanish vs Latin American Spanish

European SpanishLatin American Spanish
tú = you [singular and informal]tú = you [singular and informal]
usted = you [singular and formal]usted = you [singular and formal]
vosotros = you [plural and informal]
ustedes = you [plural and formal]ustedes = you [plural and informal/formal]

There is a big difference between European Spanish and Latin American Spanish.

In Latin America, ustedes is a plural you that can be used both informally and formally.

This means that you use ustedes to talk to children as well as the directors of a company.

In Spain this would not be the case, as you would use vosotros to talk to children, and ustedes to talk to the directors of a company.

Because you can use ustedes both informally and formally in Latin America, there’s no need for vosotros.

Therefore in Latin America vosotros is not used.

On this website, the focus is on European Spanish.

This means that vosotros will be used and ustedes means plural formal you.

However, you can still use what you learn here in Latin America.

Just be aware of this difference between European and Latin American Spanish.
