To say “that one/those ones in Spanish you will say:
- this one/those ones = ese/esa/esos/esas
When you use the words like this, they are pronouns.
This means that they don’t accompany a noun.
The noun that they refer to has been mentioned before.
Please have a look at the following examples:
¿Te gusta este abrigo? -No, a mí me gusta ese.
Do you like this coat? -No, I like that one.
De todas las novias que ha tenido Diego, esa es la que más me gusta para él.
Of all the girlfriends Diego has had, that’s the one I like the most for him.
Todos los chicos de mi clase son aburridos, pero esos son realmente divertidos.
All the kids in my class are boring, but those ones are really fun.
In every sentence you can see what they refer back to.
Me encantan esas propuestas, pero esas son las más innovadoras.
I love those proposals, but those ones are the most innovative.
It is also possible to use esas (those) and esas (those ones) in the same sentence.
Eso = That/That thing
When you want to refer to an idea, you will use:
- eso = that/that thing
In this case there is no gender.
