When to Use the Spanish Perfect Tense

You will use the Spanish present perfect tense to talk about things that started in the past and continue or repeat into the present. It can also be used to talk about things that have happened in the recent past.

Here are some examples:

vivir

He vivido en Londres durante mucho tiempo.

I have lived in London for a long time.

comer

¿Alguna vez has comido sushi?

Have you ever eaten sushi?

viajar

Lola nunca ha viajado en avión.

Lola has never travelled by plane.

visitar

Vosotros habéis visitado la India, ¿verdad?

You have visited India, haven’t you?

estar

Manuel y María han estado juntos durante 15 años.

Manuel and Maria have been together for 15 years.

volver

¿Han vuelto ya de sus vacaciones?

Are they already back from their holidays?

ver

He visto muchas cosas raras en mi vida, pero ninguna como ésta.

I have seen many strange things in my life, but nothing like this.

ver

Hemos visto a tu madre hace 20 segundos.

We saw your mother 20 seconds ago.

You can see that all examples – except the last – are about things that have begun in the past and continue into the present.

The last example demonstrates an action in the recent past.
