Querer in Imperfect vs Preterite: Affirmative Sentences

The meaning of querer (to want) in the imperfect is different than in the preterite in affirmative sentences.

In the imperfect querer retains its more normal meaning of “to want”, however in the preterite querer means “to try”.

Here are some examples:

imperfect

Aquel hombre quería robarnos.

That man wanted to rob us.

preterite

Aquel hombre quiso robarnos.

That man tried to rob us.

Querer in Imperfect vs Preterite: Negative Sentences

The meaning of querer in the imperfect is different than in the preterite in negative sentences.

In the imperfect querer retains its more normal meaning of “want”, however in the preterite querer means “refuse” which is quite strong.

Here are some examples:

imperfect

Juan no quería venir a la cena. Pero al final vino.

Juan didn’t want to come to the dinner. But in the end he came.

preterite

Juan no quiso venir a la cena. Así que se quedó en casa.

Juan didn’t want (refused) to come to the dinner. So he stayed at home.
