Estar in Imperfect vs Preterite

The meaning of estar (to be) in the imperfect is different than in the preterite.

In the imperfect, estar will be used to talk about a situation or an action where the timeframe is not important or not known. We don’t care about when something began or ended.

Here are some examples:

imperfect

Estaba en París (cuando estudiaba francés).

I was in Paris (when I was studying French). (longstanding action in the past)

imperfect

Las niñas estaban nerviosas.

The girls were nervous. (but they no longer are nervous) (timeframe not relevant)

In the preterite, estar will be used to talk about past actions with a definite time period. The action has been completed and is now no longer relevant in the present.

preterite

Estuve en París (en 2005.)

I was in Paris (in 2005). (action finished)

preterite

Las niñas estuvieron nerviosas.
