Regular ir Verbs Conjugation Method

To conjugate regular -ir verbs in the passé composé, all you have to do is replace the -ir ending of the infinitive with the –i.

choisir -> choisi

There is a three step method that will make everything very easy for you, if doing it immediately is too hard.

In order to conjugate verbs that end with -ir in the passé composé one must:

  1. Find the infintive (full verb)
  2. Cut off the -ir
  3. Add the new ending

In the conjugation table above you can see the verb choisir means to “to choose” in English.

We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “je” form using the three step method.

  1. choisir

The full verb of “to choose” is choisir in French

  1. chois

Once you cut of the ir ending all that is left is chois

  1. choisi

When we add the new ending i the final conjugated form will be choisi

So when you wish to say “I chose” in French you get:

J’ai choisi

Common Regular ir Verbs

French has three regular verb groups.

  • regular -er verbs
  • regular -ir verbs
  • regular -re verbs

The regular -ir verbs group is the second biggest group. Many French verbs fall in this group.

Here is a list of common verbs that you are sure to encounter in day-to-day life:

Pronunciation of Regular ir Verbs Conjugations

There is 1 important rule to take into account when we want to pronounce the regular ir verbs conjugation in the passé composé.

  1. The particip passé (choisi) is pronounced in the same way for all the verbs. The last sound that you hear is the i sound.
