Semi Regular cer Verbs Conjugation Method

In the Imparfait, semi regular cer verbs conjugate in a different way. The “c” is changed to a “ç” to keep the pronunciation soft.

This is done to all forms EXCEPT the nous and vous form.

So, in order to conjugate semi regular cer verbs in the imparfait one must:

  1. Take the nous form of a verb in the Present Tense
  2. Drop the -çons ending
  3. Add the new ending

The verb commencer means “to start/to begin”.

We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “je” form using the three step method.

  1. commençons

The nous form of the verb commencer is commençons.

  1. commen

Once you cut of the çons ending all that is left is commen.

  1. commençais

When we add the new ending (çais) the final conjugated form will be commençais.

So when you wish to say “I was starting” in French you get:

Je commençais

So, to conjugate semi regular cer verbs in the imparfait, all you have to do is take the nous form a verb in the present tense, drop the ending, and replace it with the new ending.

commencer-> je commençais

financer -> nous financions
