How to Negate Infinitives in French

If you want to negate a sentence with two verbs, however it’s the infinitive (full verb) that need to be negated, then you will put the “ne pasbefore the infinitive.

  • ne pas [infinitive]

J’ai décidé de ne pas manger.

I decided not to eat.

L’essentiel est de ne pas perdre patience.

The most important thing is not to lose patience.

Elle a averti les enfants de ne pas jouer dans la rue.

She warned the children not to play on the street.

Je vous suggère de ne pas parler si fort.

I suggest you don’t speak so loudly.

Carla nous a dit de ne pas nager ici.

Carla told us not to swim here.

If there is a pronoun before the infinitive, then “ne pas” will be placed before that pronoun.

J’ai dit de ne pas le faire.

I said don’t do that.

Il a décidé de ne pas le vendre.

He decided not to sell it.
