Regular -er Verbs Conjugation Method
This section will show you how regular -er verbs are conjugated in the plus-que-parfait.
There is a two step method that will make everything very easy for you.
In order to conjugate verbs that end with -er in the plus-que-parfait one must:
- Conjugate avoir in the imparfait
- Add the particip passé of the -er verb
The verb parler means “to speak” in English.
We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “je” form using the two step method.
- avais
Avoir in the plus-que-parfait is avais.
- parlé
The particip passé of parler is parlé.
So when you wish to say “I had spoken” in French you get:
J’avais parlé
Common Regular -er Verbs
French has three regular verb groups
- regular -er verbs
- regular -ir verbs
- regular -re verbs
The regular -er verbs group is the biggest and most useful group. Most French verbs fall in this group.
Here is a list of common verbs that you are sure to encounter in day-to-day life:

Pronunciation of Regular er Verbs Plus-Que-Parfait Conjugations
There is 1 important rule to take into account, when you want to pronounce regular er verbs plus-que-parfait conjugations.
- The je, tu, il/elle/on and ils/elles form have the same pronunciation for the verb and the particip passé.
J’avais parlé

Ils avaient parlé
