Regular Ir Verbs Conjugation Method

There is a three-step method that will make conjugating regular Spanish ir verbs very easy for you.

In order to conjugate verbs that end with -ir in the imperfect tense one must:

  1. Find the infinitive (full verb)
  2. Cut off the -ir
  3. Add the new ending (ía, ías, ia, íamos, íais, ían)

In the conjugation table above you can see the verb vivir which means to “to live” in English.

We will take this verb and conjugate it in the “yo” form using the three-step method.

  1. vivir

The full verb of “to live” is vivir in Spanish.

  1. viv

Once you cut of the ir ending all that is left is viv.

  1. vivía

When we add the new ending ía, the final conjugated form will be vivía.

So when you wish to say “I used to live” or “I was living” in Spanish you get:

Yo vivía
