There are some verbs that have a different conjugation in the preterite for the yo form.

Verbs that end with -car, -zar, and -gar conjugate differently in the yo form.

You will learn how they conjugate differently, and which words are in these groups.

Car Verbs: C > Qu

buscar (to look for)
yobusqué
buscaste
él/ella/ustedbuscó

In the table above, you can see an example of a verb that ends with -car.

For these verbs, the -c is replaced with a -qu in the yo form.

buscar

Busqué a mi gato por todas partes, pero se había escapado.

I looked everywhere for my cat, but it had run away.

embarcar

¿A qué hora embarcaste?

What time did you board? (you=tú)

acercar

Él acercó sus manos a las mías.

He brought his hands close to mine.

equivocarse

Nosotros nos equivocamos muchas veces.

We get things wrong often enough.

tocar

¿Vosotros tocasteis la pared recién pintada?

Did you touch the freshly painted wall?

explicar

Ellos lo han explicado muy bien.

They have explained it very well.

I blew out the candle before it burned out.
