Introduction to Spanish Possessive Pronouns

In Spanish A1 you learnt about Spanish possessive adjectives.

This lesson deals with a similar subject, however there are some differences.

The biggest difference is the following:

  • It IS possible to use a possessive adjective before a noun, but it IS NOT possible to use a possessive pronoun before a noun.

Possessive pronouns replace a noun.

For that reason possessive pronouns cannot be placed before nouns.

Please keep this in mind as you continue with this lesson.

Table of Spanish Possessive Adjectives

Masculine SingularFeminine SingularMasculine PluralFeminine PluralEnglish

nuestronuestranuestrosnuestrasours
vuestrovuestravuestrosvuestrasyours (vosotros)
suyosuyasuyossuyasyours (ustedes)
suyosuyasuyossuyastheirs

The Spanish possessive pronouns agree with the noun that they replace.

You can have a look at the table to see all the variants.

Please have a look at the following examples:

Esta falda es mía.

This skirt is mine.

Estos bolígrafos son míos.

These pens are mine.

Creo que este libro es tuyo, te lo olvidaste aquí el otro día.

I think this book is yours, you forgot it here the other day.

¿Los zapatos de la puerta son tuyos?

Are the shoes on the door yours?

El coche que está aparcado en nuestro garaje es suyo.

The car parked in our garage is his.

Creo que estos calcetines son suyos, llévalos a su habitación.

I think these socks are his, take them to his room.

Esta chaqueta es suya.

This jacket is yours. (usted)

¿Estas gafas son tuyas?

Are these glasses yours? (tú)

Aquel perro es el nuestro.

That’s our dog.

Esta casa es nuestra.

This house is ours.

¿Esos niños tan mayores son vuestros?

Are these grown-up children yours?

All the possessive pronouns are after the noun.

As you can see suyo, suya, suyos and suyas can refer to many owners.

Therefore you carefully need to look at the context to figure out who is being referred to.

Spanish Possessive Pronouns Used with Definite Articles

It is also possible to use Spanish possessive pronouns with definite articles:

el/la/los/las + possessive pronouns

You will do this for two reasons:

  1. To strengthen the feeling of possession.

Esta comida es nuestra. Esta comida es la nuestra.

This food is ours. This food is our food.

When you use the definite article, you really strengthen the feeling of possession.

  1. If the possessive pronoun is used in the beginning of a sentence.

Mi paella sabía rara. ¿La tuya también sabía rara?

My paella tasted weird. Did yours taste weird too?

Nuestra paella sabía rara. ¿La vuestra también sabía rara?

Our paella tasted weird. Did yours taste weird too?
