In Spanish, you can use the verb tomar instead of comer (to eat) and beber (to drink).

In this context tomar will mean “to have”.

Sometimes people think that they should use tener because it is the literal translation of “to have”, however in Spanish you will use tomar with food and drinks.

Here are some examples:

El día de nuestro aniversario comimos ostras en un restaurante de lujo.

On the day of our anniversary we ate oysters in a fancy restaurant.

Bebimos un poco de champán después del trabajo.

We drank some champagne after work.

El día de nuestro aniversario tomamos ostras en un restaurante de lujo.

On the day of our anniversary we had oysters in a fancy restaurant.

Tomamos un poco de champán después del trabajo.

We had some champagne after work.

As you can see, you can say the same thing with tomar.

You can’t take (eat or drink) anything before you take the test. Come on an empty stomach.

Nos hemos tomado unas aceitunas y ya no tenemos hambre.

We’ve had some olives and we’re not hungry anymore.

No has tomado nada desde que te has levantado. Debes de estar hambriento.

You haven’t had anything (to eat or drink) since you woke up. You must be hungry.

Would you like to have a drink at the bar in the park?
