Please don’t forget, to form the past participle:

  • habl-ar -> habl-ado
  • com-er -> com-ido
  • viv-ir -> viv-ido

Regular Verbs Conjugation Method

There is a two-step method that will make conjugating regular Spanish verbs very easy for you.

In order to conjugate regular verbs in the past perfect tense one must:

  1. Conjugate haber in the imperfect tense
  2. Add the past participle

We are going to conjugate the verb comer (to eat) in the yo form as an example.

  1. había

You take the yo form of haber in the imperfect tense which is había.

  1. comido

You take the past participle of comer which is comido.

So when you wish to say “I had eaten” in Spanish you get:

Yo había comido

Regular Verbs in Spanish

Spanish has three regular verb groups

  • regular -ar verbs
  • regular -er verbs
  • regular -ir verbs

Common Regular Ar Verbs

The regular ar verbs group is the biggest and most useful group. Most Spanish verbs fall in this group.

Common Regular Er Verbs

The regular er verbs group is the second biggest group. A lot of Spanish verbs fall in this group.

Here is a list of common verbs that you are sure to encounter in day-to-day life:

cometer (un error)to make (a mistake)
comprenderto understand
correrto run
creerto believe
deberto owe

Common Regular Ir Verbs

The regular ir verbs group is the third biggest verb group. Many Spanish verbs fall in this group.

Yo todavía no había hablado con nadie sobre el incidente.

I had not yet spoken to anyone about the incident.

decir

Sé que no me habías dicho la verdad.

I know you hadn’t told me the truth.

comer

Mario no había comido mucho antes de tirarse a la piscina, por eso tuvo un corte de digestión.

Mario had not eaten much before jumping into the pool, which is why he had a digestion break.

entrenar

Nosotros habíamos entrenado duro para ganar la competición.

We had trained hard to win the competition.

descubrir

Cuando llegamos ya habíais descubierto la verdad.

By the time we arrived you had already discovered the truth. [vosotros]

caminar

Estaban agotados porque habían caminado mucho.

They were exhausted because they had walked a long way.

gustar

Creímos que a ustedes la película no les había gustado nada.

We thought you hadn’t liked the film at all.
