To say “one of/any of/some of” in Spanish you will say:

  • alguno/alguna/algunos/algunas + de +noun/pronoun

Mis alumnos son bastante inteligentes, aunque algunos de ellos deben esforzarse el doble que los demás.

My students are quite intelligent, although some of them have to work twice as hard as the others.

Alguna de mis amigas ha estado en Indonesia y dice que es impresionante.

One of my friends has been to Indonesia and says it’s amazing.

Algunas de mis amigas son muy escandalosas.

Some of my friends are very loud.

You will use the singular alguno/alguna to say “one”, and the plural algunos/algunas to say “some”:

Alguna (una) de mis amigas ha estado en Ibiza y dice que no le ha gustado.

One of my friends has been to Ibiza and says she didn’t like it.

Algunas de mis amigas son muy escandalosas.

Some of my friends are very loud.

You may ask yourself what the difference is between this form and using “uno/una de“.

Seeing as you could have also said “Una de mis amigas ha estado en Ibiza y dice que no le ha gustado.”

With alugna you are being less specific than with “uno/una de“.

Using “uno/una de” generally means that you are referring to a specific person.

This partitive structure tends to be followed by a possessive:

Algunos de nuestros vecinos dejan basura en el edificio.

Some of our neighbours leave rubbish in the building.

Alguna de mis tías se dejó el abrigo anoche.

One of my aunts left her coat on last night.

It can also be followed by a subject pronoun (yo/tú/él/ella/usted/nosotros/vosotros/ellos/ellas/ustedes):

¿Alguno de vosotros ha pedido comida a domicilio?

Have any of you ever ordered delivery food?

Algunas de ellas nunca olvidarán esa terrible experiencia.

Some of them will never forget that terrible experience.
