How to Use Spanish Indirect and Direct Object Pronouns Together

In Spanish A2 you learn about the Spanish indirect object pronouns and the Spanish direct object pronouns.

You can see them in the table above too.

In this lesson, you will learn how to use the Spanish indirect and direct object pronouns together.

When the indirect object pronouns le (to him/her) and les (to them) are used together with the direct object pronoun la/lo (it) or los/las (them) a change happens.

The change is that le and les become se.

So, the indirect object pronouns have to change.

This is done to avoid having too many similar-sounding words in the same sentence.

So in other words, le/les become se when used with lo/la/los/las.

Have a look at some examples:

El abuelo se lo regaló.

Grandfather gave it to him/her.

No se lo contamos.

We did not tell them.

Acércaselo a tu hermana.

Give it to your sister.

Se lo inventaron.

They made it up.

Voy a prestárselo.

I’m going to lend it to them.

La abuela está cocinándoselos.

Grandma is cooking (them) for them.

Me gustaría saber por qué se los compraron.

I would like to know why they bought them.

As you can see the indirect object pronouns have changed.

Le and les are gone and have turned into se.

Please note that the indirect object pronoun is placed before the direct object pronoun.

More on placement in the next chapter!

Where to Put the Se

You may wonder, where do I put the se?

Well, it depends.

  • You put se before the verb, if the verb is conjugated

Se lo inventaron.

They made it up.

  • You put se after the verb, if you have an infinitive, imperative, or gerund

Voy a prestárselo.

I’m going to lend it to them.

  • Should an infinitive or gerund be accompanied with a conjugated verb, then you may also put se before of the conjugated verb.

No se la puedo descambiar, lo siento.

I can’t exchange it, sorry.

No pueden detectárselo.

They cannot detect it.

Vamos a regalárselo.

We are going to give it to him.

Se lo vamos a regalar.

We are going to give it to him.
