What/Which in Spanish Questions = Cuál/Cuáles

To say “what” “which”, or “which one(s)” in questions you will say:

what/which/which one(s) = cuál / cuáles

Cuál will be used for singular nouns.

Cuáles will be used for plural nouns.

It only has to agree in number, not in gender.

Please note that cuál/cuáles can only be followed with a verb or the preposition “de”.

Here are some examples with direct questions:

¿Cuál es tu color favorito?

What is your favourite colour?

¿Cuál es vuestra canción preferida?

What is your favourite song?

Hay algunas cosas de las que me arrepiento en mi vida. – ¿Como cuáles?

There are some things I regret in my life. – Like which ones?

He visto varios vestidos que me gustan. – ¿Cuáles te gustan más?

I’ve seen several dresses that I like. – Which ones do you like the most?

Here are some examples with indirect questions:

Cuéntame cuál es el momento más embarazoso que has vivido.

Tell me which is the most embarrassing moment you have ever experienced.

Querían saber cuáles eran mis pensamientos.

They wanted to know what my thoughts were.

You have also learnt about el cual/la cual/los cuales/las cuales, and may be wondering how they differ.

Well, el cual/la cual/los cuales/las cuales are preceded by articles and are not used in questions.

On the other hand, cuál/cuáles are not preceded by articles and are only used in questions.
