To Like Someone in Spanish
In this lesson you will learn how to say “to like someone” in Spanish in a romantic context.
There is a small complexity when it comes to saying this though.
The structure is the inverse of the English structure.
When you want to say “I like you” this is what you would say:
Tú me gustas.
I like you.
You may have expected “Yo te gusto“, however this means:
Yo te gusto.
You like me.
Essentially what you are saying in Spanish is “someone is pleasing to someone else”
Tú me gustas.
I like you. [You are pleasing to me]
Yo te gusto.
You like me. [I am pleasing to you]
Tú le gustas.
He/She likes you. [You are pleasing to him/her]
Yo le gusto.
He/She likes me. [I am pleasing to him/her]
The one that is doing the liking has been underlined.
You use the Spanish indirect object pronouns for this (me/te/le/nos/os/les)
Here are some more examples:
Creo que yo le gusto a Juan.
I think Juan likes me.
Se nota que tú le gustas a Ana.
You can tell Ana likes you.
Parece que a mi perro le gustáis.
My dog seems to like you guys.
A mi hermano le gusta Carmen.
My brother likes Carmen.
A Clara le gustan los hombres con uniforme.
Clara likes men in uniform.
Creo que nosotros le gustamos al jefe.
I think the boss likes us.
Vosotros me gustáis. Os veo con muchas ganas de trabajar.
I like you. I see you guys really want to work.
¿A vosotros os han gustado los novatos?
Did you like the newbies?
As you can see is also possible to add “a + mí/ti/él/ etc.” to really make clear who is doing the liking, however this is not obligatory.
When 2 or more people like each other, you will use the plural reflexive pronouns (nos/os/se).
Berta y yo nos gustamos mucho.
Berta and I like each other very much.
Se nota que vosotros dos os gustáis demasiado.
I can tell you two like each other too much. [vosotros]
Tanto David como Raquel se gustan, pero no se atreven a decírselo el uno al otro.
Both David and Rachel like each other, but they don’t dare tell each other.
