When to Use El Futuro Próximo

You will use El Futuro Próximo to express actions that are going to happen in the near future.

Generally speaking, the near future is anything from now until tomorrow.

In English the near future tense also exists. You will use [to be going to] + verb.

Have a look at the following examples:

ir

Esta noche yo voy a ir a tu fiesta.

I am going to your party this evening.

ir

¿Vas a ir a Tokio mañana?

Are you going to go to Tokyo tomorrow?

You are mentioning an event that will happen in the evening, as well as a possible trip to Tokyo the next day.

Both of these are about the near future.

And as you know, when you use the near future you have to use El Futuro Próximo.

How to form El Futuro Próximo

yovoy
vas
él/ella/ustedva
nosotros/nosotrasvamos
vosotros/vosotrasvais
ellos/ellas/ustedesvan

You can form El Futuro Próximo in the following way:

  • ir in the present tense + a + infinitive

jugar

Sergio no va a jugar al tenis.

Sergio is not going to play tennis.

comer

Esta noche nosotros vamos a comer en un restaurante nuevo.

Tonight we are going to eat in a new restaurant.

comprar

¿Vosotros vais a comprar algo mañana?

Are you going to buy something tomorrow?

beber

¿Qué van a beber ustedes?

What are you going to drink?

In every example, you can see that ir is conjugated in the present tense, and then followed by “a” and the infinitive (full verb).
