Cuando is a relative adverb.
Cuando means “when” when it is used to begin a subordinate clause.
Here are some examples:
Escuchamos un ruido enorme cuando salimos del metro.
We heard a huge noise when we came out of the metro.
Mañana es cuando se cumplen diez años de su muerte.
Tomorrow is the tenth anniversary of his death.
Cuándo [With an Acccent]
You use cuándo in questions and in direct and indirect exclamatory sentences.
Cuándo means “when”.
Here are some examples:
¿Cuándo vais a anunciar vuestra boda a la familia?
When are you going to announce your wedding to the family?
¡Cuándo terminará esta agonía!
When will this agony end!
Mamá me ha preguntado cuándo vas a venir a visitarla.
Mum asked me when you are coming to visit her.
Cuando vs Cuándo
A useful trick that you can use if you are ever in doubt is to see if you can replace “when” with “at what moment in time”.
If you can do so, then you have to use cuándo [with an accent].
If you cannot do so, then you have to use cuando [without an accent].
¡Cuándo dejará de molestarnos!
When (at what moment) will he stop bothering us!
El próximo sábado es cuando mi hermana dará a luz.Next Saturday is when my sister will give birth.
