Either Or in Spanish = Ya Sea … O & Ya Fuera … O

To say “either…or” or in Spanish you will say:

  • either … or = ya sea … o [present or future]
  • either … or = ya fuera … o [past]

You use the first construction for actions that refer to the present or future, and the second one for actions that refer to the past.

Sometimes it can also be translated as “whether… or”.

Here are some examples:

Este es un error común, ya sea consciente o inconscientemente.

This is a common mistake, whether consciously or unconsciously.

Somos una familia muy unida. Hablamos casi todos los días, ya sea por Whatsapp o por Skype.

We are a very close family. We talk almost every day, either by Whatsapp or Skype.

Mi padre practicaba deporte todas las mañanas. Ya fuera salir a caminar o correr en la cinta, siempre hacía algo.

My father played sport every morning. Whether it was going for a walk or running on the treadmill, he was always doing something.

Durante mi estancia en España solo hablé en español, ya fuera en el restaurante o en el albergue.

During my stay in Spain I only spoke Spanish, either in the restaurant or in the hostel.

At times, you may omit the “ya” and change the structure somewhat:

  • sea …, o …
  • sea …, sea …
  • fuera …, o …
  • fuera …, fuera …

Sea por necesidad o por gusto, el caso es que lo hacemos todos.

Whether by necessity or by taste, the fact is that we all do it.

Please note that “sea” and “fuera” have to agree with what they refer to.

Should what follows be a plural adjective or a plural noun, then they become “sean” and “fueran“.

Les informaremos de todos los resultados obtenidos, ya sean positivos o negativos.

We will inform you of all the results obtained, whether positive or negative.

A Juan le gustaban todas, ya fueran rubias o morenas, altas o bajas.

Juan liked them all, whether they were blondes or brunettes, tall or short.
