The verb connaître means “to know”.

There is 1 important rule to know when you want to use connaître.

Connaître is always followed by a noun (e.g. people, places, and things).

Je connais Tom.

I know Tom.

Tu connais Paris?

Do you know Paris?

Elle connaît beaucoup de choses sur les fleurs.

She knows a lot about flowers.

Connaître and its Derivatives

apparaître to appear
disparaîtreto disappear
paraîtreto appear/to seem
reconnaître to recognise

As you can see group of aître verbs has a few important verbs that you should be aware of.

All of these verbs are conjugated in the same way.

One big exception to this is the verb naître which means “to be born”

Pronunciation of Connaître

In this section on connaître conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.

There are 2 important rules to take into account when we want to pronounce a connaître conjugation in the present tense in French.

  1. The je, tu, and il/elle/on form all have the same pronunciation. The s, and t are not pronounced.

Je connais

Tu connais

Il connaît

All these VERBS have the same exact pronunciation.

  1. In the ils/elles form one does not pronounce the ent.

Ils connaissent

The last letter that is pronounced is the “s“.
