Usage of Vouloir
This section on vouloir conjugation in the present tense will show you how vouloir is used in French.
Vouloir means “to want” and is an irregular verb.
Vouloir is used when you want to state a desire or when you have a wish. This is similar to how you would use “to want” in English.
Je veux manger.
I want to eat.
Please note that if two verbs are placed next to each other, the first will be conjugated, and the second will be the full verb (infinitive).
Pronunciation of Vouloir Conjugations

There are 2 important rules to take into account when you want to pronounce a vouloir conjugation in the present tense.
- The je, tu, and il/elle/on verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -x and –t endings are not pronounced. It is just the “veu” part that gets pronounced.
