Usage of Partir

This section on partir conjugation in the present tense will show you how partir is used in French.

Partir means “to leave” and falls in the third group of -ir verb conjugations.

There are 2 important usages for the verb partir.

  1. Partir is used to indicate that one is leaving.

Je pars aujourd’hui.

I’m leaving today.

Je pars cet après-midi.

I”m leaving this afternoon.

  1. Partir can also be used to indicate that one is leaving a place. In that case it will be followed with a preposition (e.g. I leave from/for = Je par de / pour).

Je pars de chez lui.

I’m leaving his house.

Je pars pour le Canada demain.

I’m leaving for Canada tomorrow.

Derivatives of Partir: -tir Verbs

As you can see this group of -tir verbs has a few important verbs that you should be aware of.

All of these verbs are conjugated in the same way.

The -tir verbs fall in the third group of the -ir verbs.

Pronunciation of Partir

In this section on partir conjugation in the present tense we will focus on pronunciation.

There are 2 important rules to take into account when you want to pronounce a partir conjugation in the present tense in French.

  1. The je, tu, and il/elle/on verb forms all have the same pronunciation. The -s andt endings are not pronounced. In this case, it is just the “par” part that gets pronounced.

All these verbs have the same exact pronunciation.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.

  1. In the ils/elles verb form, you don’t pronounce the -ent ending. In this case, it is just the “part” part that gets pronounced.

Ils partent

The last letter that is pronounced is the “t“.

You don’t pronounce the letters in red.
