How to Express Possession in Spanish
To express possession in Spanish you will use “de” (of).
Before I show you an example of this in Spanish, let’s first have a look at how we do it in English.
In English, you will use ‘s to express possession.
Here’s an example.
This is Noah’s car.
As you can see, you are adding the ‘s after Noah.
However, in Spanish this will look at bit different.
Este es el coche de Noah.
This is Noah‘s car.
Essentially in English you would say: the person’s object.
But in Spanish you would say: the object of the person.
The Spanish form was also used in Old English
El libro de David.
The book of David.
Here are some more examples that show you how to express possession in Spanish.
La pluma de Carlos.
Carlos’s pen.
Esta es la caja de mi hermano.
This is my brother’s box.
Esta es la lámpara de mi hermana.
This is my sister’s lamp.
Los coches de mis padres.
My parents’ cars.
Please note that you always need to add the definite articles (el/la and los/las) in Spanish.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that contractions can happen too.
If “de” is followed by “el” you will contract to “del“
Este es el libro del cura.
This is the priest’s book.
If “de” is followed by “la” you will not contract.
Esta es la bufanda de la mujer.
This is the woman’s scarf.
